a land lays undiscovered and untouched by mankind far away protected by ocean waters. it is a miracle humans haven't discovered it, with freshwater, beaches, forests, volcanoes and mountains covering its landscape. it would be a great resource to people, yet it remains safe and sound. on it, live animals of all species. evolved separately from humans, they are not subject to their terrible viruses, pollution, or diseases, and live long happy lives. the only deaths they experience are by each other, malnutrition, or their own horrible illnesses and injuries.
the rulers of this vast land are dogs. with incredible intelligence, loyalty to each other, and strength they quickly were able to claim and control most of the lands. every other species is mostly afraid of them, except when they are alone. their packs and groups are substantial however, as well as their population. they make the rules of the island, including hunting and eating other animals as food. the other species live in fear of them, but also a bit of bitterness and anger swims under the depths. no revolt or fight against them has ever managed to grasp enough strength however.
overall the dogs are mostly fair. only hunting and killing for food (usually) and only claiming land they need for themselves. but as their population grows, so does their thirst for power, and so does the safety of the rest of the population of animals.
Whilst now the dogs seem to all but own the island Cattus, with their population expanded to overrule all other species, and a certain fear settled in the hearts of others at their very mention, it was not always this way. In fact, the island of Cattus was once entirely devoid of dogs, the closest to them among the island canidae being wolves. Within these times Cattus was a land of peace, interrupted by small disputes that were easily rectified. Beyond the wolves who kept to small packs, the rest of the island species remained solitary, other than mated pairs and small family groups. The pecking order was often decided within each land by size or cunning, and territories were rarely fought over without too many stomachs for each animal to fill.
This peace was something that shattered when the dogs arrived.
Created by the hand of men and their manipulative ways, these beings were bred for work and fighting, to guard, serve, and kill for sport. Many of them were savage creatures who cared little for others, yet this was precisely as humans desired them. With their senses and instincts dulled compared to their wild ancestors, these dogs from the mainlands were taught to fear man and hate everything else. Those humans that lacked these canidae soon greatly desired them, though one such human civilization had troubled waters surrounding it that were difficult to safely traverse. Many of the boats that brought these dogs, as well as other domesticated species such as cats, would struggle within these waters and crash upon a mysterious island, until the ways of humans changed and their navigation improved.
While the dogs, and even a few other domestic species, survived far longer than any surviving humans did upon their arrivals to Cattus, at first their existence was far from pleasant. Displeased with the invasion to their peace by mysterious creatures they had never met, the bigger and stronger, or even smaller but better adapted, creatures of the island would torment the canines in hopes to drive them off. However, while for a long time they suffered for their smaller size and inadequate genes compared to wild creatures, these dogs excelled in their intelligence.
With learning combined from the humans that reared them and the wolves that they watched, they began to interact with each other better and build their own packs. However, unlike the wolves who stayed non-violent and reclusive in their small but closely-tied groups, these dog packs were large and aggressive, combating their smaller size with a strength in numbers mentality. There was no love to be found within these early groups, bonded as they were only for survival.
Within their packs, these dogs had a new advantage over the other species of Cattus. They had protection, social interaction, and the ability to hunt together and care for each other. It would have been fine just like that, boosting their survival by protecting, feeding and caring for one another. For once they were equals on the island despite their smaller size. They were accepted, however reluctantly.
Yet even with humans well since forgotten, the aggressive instincts they were instilled with remained.
Insistent upon bringing themselves to the top of the pecking order, much of the dogs banded into one huge alliance made up of many different parts, and started a war upon the other species. Without the protection of their own groups, the other creatures, no matter how big or strong they may have been in comparison, stood no chance against the cunning and sheer numbers of the dogs, whose population had skyrocketed with their increased chances of survival.
It was not until fear was instilled among the other species and they started banding into their own smaller groups for defense, that the dogs finally backed off. Over time the aggressive instincts faded from many of the dogs due to their now less hazardous ways of life, and disgusted as they were by those that drove the war, the alliance split and most of the packs fell to ruins.
However, the damage was already done. With their numbers so high compared to the other species, even now that the war is long since forgotten, dogs still remain the most feared species of the island. With their intelligence and their great populations, the dogs took over the island piece by piece, though perhaps it will not be long before the other species start to learn by example.
The war may be over, but Cattus is far from a friendly place.
